Aston Rowant NNR
Mixed woodlandChalk grasslandOpen downland & arable
Aston Rowant is one of the most expansive semi-natural landscapes in Oxfordshire, combining steep chalk grassland with mature beech woods that sweep across the Chilterns escarpment. The open slopes are ideal for scanning for raptors, with Red Kite, Buzzard and Peregrine commonly seen, and Hobby frequenting the site during summer. Along the grassland, Skylark and Meadow Pipit breed, while scrub fringes hold Whitethroat and Linnet.
This is a popular location for broad-ranging surveys and visible migration watching, with the open skyline offering spectacular views and the opportunity to track passage species moving along the ridge.
